It’s Monumental! Touring Monument Valley

In the upper right corner of Arizona, in the middle of Indian Country, lie two natural miracles: Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly. Just ninety miles apart, you can see a lot in just a couple days. Which is what we did.

We started with a tour of Monument Valley. Rather than drive ourselves, we joined 10 other people under a canvas canopy on the back of a Dodge flatbed truck.

It was rustic, but it had seatbelts. We needed them. The sweet Navajo woman who took us on our wild, dusty ride was not hemmed in by the actual road or put off by heavy traffic. She used to be a FedEx driver.

The trip took a little over 4 hours. There were no bathrooms. We saw a lot. We needed to pee. But we saw a lot.
You’re discouraged from photographing Navajos, so while we were among them and by their homes, you won’t see them here.
